Our Emails Reaching Out To The School Board

Members of the school board,

I was on the Jackson High School robotics team for three years. Patrick Woolfenden is the adult who builds the team’s robot. This is why the team is a world champion. The students have almost no role in building the robot.
At first it bothered me to pretend we build the robot, but I got used to it after a while. It was obvious that the Cascade and Everett teams didn’t do this, but Jackson did and that became my new normal. You go to competitions, pretend the students built the robot, the “losers” at Cascade and Everett and almost every other high school play by the rules, and Jackson crushes them. That started to feel normal after a while. At first I felt ashamed to be doing and thinking these things, but by the end of my first year on the team, those feelings became dulled in my heart. When people talk about corrupting our youth, I think this is what they mean.

I was supposed to learn how to work as part of a team, build a robot, develop my skills, and grow as a person. What I actually learned is how to silence my conscience. I learned to invert my sense of morals because cheating without getting caught meant you were smart. Playing by the rules isn’t admirable, it means you’re stupid. I learned if you’re cheating, it’s important to use your power to intimidate the people in your organization to keep them from speaking out. I learned the importance of shutting down dissent if you want to keep a secret. I learned the value of purging an organization of anyone brave enough to speak up because people who are brave are a threat and people who can be intimidated are useful. I learned that you can do almost anything if people are afraid and that fear is how you control and manipulate the weak and that duty, honor, and integrity are just ideas. Fear is real and fear is power. I learned that the administrators who should be asking questions, intentionally don’t, so they can deny knowing about what is going on if anyone important finds out. I learned that adults often care more about keeping their job than doing their job and if the kids they are supposed to protect have to suffer, then kids have to suffer. The most important thing I learned is that adults don’t always step up to protect kids. I think the world is filled with abused children and corruption, not because no one cares or knows, but because the people that do care and know are too afraid to speak out or too apathetic to do anything other than take the path of least resistance.

I don’t think the district’s precious tax dollars should be spent on a bunch of adults building a robot. If Patrick wants to build a robot, he should pay for it himself.
We have a tough road ahead of us. Coach Pihl and Patrick aren’t fools. They’ve been at this a long time and done a thorough job of intimidating the students. Coach Pihl claims to be close friends with Superintendent Saltzman and claims they go to lunch together any time anyone questions the way the team is run. But we have advantages too. There are hundreds of students who have gone through the program at this point and every day it gets harder to keep their secret. Most importantly, we have the truth.

Will any of you meet with me?

Members of the school board,

Is there any way we can meet so you can get a first hand account of what is going on behind the scenes with Jackson’s robotics team? I think in situations like this it is useful to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. Pihl made it clear that it would be futile to report him through the district’s bureaucracy. Each step of the way, Robin has tried to report what they witnessed to the next person in the hierarchy and each step of the way Robin has faced reactions that we interpreted to be retaliation.

This should be an easy win for everyone and require minimal effort to uncover the truth. There are probably 400+ people with direct knowledge of the team’s modus operandi and the fact that taxpayer money is being used to build a robot by a grown man and that kids are required to lie about it. This is so patently contrary to common sense that I would be surprised if any objective person would find Jackson’s actions tolerable. There are certainly people with something to lose given that all of this has been happening for years under their watch and they would be loathe to admit their complicity, even if that complicity was only comprised of omission of action. Which is why you have a promise from me to be a reliable partner in all of this. Not only will you have my personal support, you’ll have the support of my company, the companies that support StudentsFIRST.tech, and the thousands of students globally that just watched a team that is synonymous with cheating, win the world championship. This issue keeps growing in scale and for me this is about how my tax dollars are being spent and I think I speak for all sane voters when I say that this is not how I imagined the money I put into our educational system would be used.

Robin, Rachelle, and myself would love to meet with any members of board that are willing. You will get a factual recounting of events without embellishment. If the circumstances feel ‘safe’, there are other students that are willing to come forward as well. I promised to be a reliable partner and I meant it. I’m not a complex guy. I’m a man of my word and if you’re willing to do something about this problem, I’ll be with you every step of the way.

Our ideal outcome would be to work in conjunction with the board and fix this problem from the inside. Please let me know if there is any interest in a face-to-face meeting.

Ms. Laurence,

I wanted to make sure I reached out to at least once.  The allegations we’re making about Jackson High School are serious and factual.  If you’d like to meet with Robin and hear what they have to say, I think you would be able to make an assessment very quickly about whether their account is accurate or not.  If that went well, we could introduce you to other students who have observed the same thing Robin has observed.

I would like to work together to fix this problem and if you’re willing to tackle this problem, you’ll have our full support and you’ll find me to be a man of my word and my family to be factual.  We have no incentive to lie.  The people we are making allegations against are highly incentivized to deceive given the allegations we’re making.  I’m not sure how connected Pihl is or how far people are willing to go who would lose out if the truth is widely known.  What I can say is that if you pay attention and are trying to discern the truth, I would recommend noting that the administrators who disagree with us are careful not to make full throated defenses of Jackson.

They never write that they looked into the issue and the allegations we’re making have no merit.  I’m sure you’re astute enough to recognize CYA when you see it.  We don’t have that problem.  Robin is quite comfortable saying names and making specific accusations and I’m sure you’re well aware that truth is a near absolute defense against claims of slander or libel.  From everything I have seen, the administrators I’ve observed are very careful to get it in writing from Pihl that nothing untoward is going on.  I suspect they do this so they can point to it later and claim to have been deceived.  They look to shift responsibility and deflect.  I have an email from Balla where he ignores the impropriety of tax payer money being used by an adult to build a robot and instead tries to get us to take the issue up with the charity that runs the robotics competitions.  I have an email from Tower where he is trying to get me to state in writing that I am not aware of him being aware of any allegations of misuse of taxpayer money by the Jackson team.
None of this is absolute proof, but it does demonstrate that everyone involved is mindful to have an escape hatch….except us.  We don’t need an escape hatch because we’re the only party, along with the kids we work with, that actually have the truth on our side.

A lot of things are going to happen in the next few months and years and I am hopeful we can work together and be on the same side on this.

Thank you for your time and please let me know if there is interest in a brief meeting.  I would be happy to meet at a Starbucks or at one of my office buildings in Everett.  I promise it will not be a waste of your time.  If this turns into a drawn out struggle, you have my word that I will not abandon you or this issue, I’ll see it through all the way to the end, and I will bring substantial resources to bear from my company and Robin will do the same from studentsFIRST’s resources to a degree that I’m certain will shock you.

Thank you and please let me know if there is interest in meeting.
